Vesalius
In 2015 I was commissioned to reproduce the title page of De humani corporis fabrica, the celebrated sixteenth-century anatomical treatise by Andreas Vesalius. The proposal came through the surgeon Hernán Demonti, a collector with a passion for anatomy. The complexity of the image, full of figures and Mannerist detail, was a challenge I took on with enthusiasm.
The original carving, made on a hand-built and hand-polished palo blanco block, took me several months of work and study. During that process I also studied the old engravers Dürer and Doré.
My relationship with Vesalius continued: in 2018 I carved the image again in pear wood, a piece that later traveled to Germany. In 2021 I began a new copy commissioned by the Mexican surgeon José Augusto Miranda Henríquez, a piece that was exhibited at the Centro Cultural Recoleta before being sent to Mexico in 2025.
Thus, Vesalius' work became a bridge between my practice, the history of engraving and the medical community that still finds symbolic and human value in that image.
