The workshop has two kinds of presses. For woodblock printing I use a vertical screw press, the kind often sold as a bookbinding press, but here it is used for printing, not for binding. It gives a deep, even impression on the relief block, just as in the old days. For intaglio, and for pressing and embossing paper, I use an etching press (a copperplate press with a roller).

I also make my own paper: I mill the pulp and form the sheets myself, and I emboss them by hand. Each edition is printed on paper made for it, creating unique multiple originals.

WOODS

The workshop includes a carpentry shop where I make the woodblock matrices myself: I cut the blocks with a miter saw, then sand and prepare each one by hand before carving.

The blocks are cut mainly across the trunk (end grain) from palo blanco, prized for its durability and its ability to hold fine detail. Guatambu, maple and pear are also used.

Every edition is made start to finish in this workshop: wood, paper, carving and printing. Interested in a commission? See custom ex libris
