Handmade Editions
Below, the video Hannah Batsel shared of her Series Promo, sent from my workshop to Chicago. Thank you to each person who chose one of these books: every copy that travels makes the next one possible.
Artist's books engraved, printed and bound by hand
The Series are graphic projects in book format. I do the whole process myself: I make the paper in my workshop from cellulose pulp, I carve the matrices with the burin on end-grain wood (texts included), and I print them on analog presses. Every edition is numbered and limited, and each copy is unique: its paper, its pressure and the ink of that day.
- Xylos Antiquas: a reconstruction of 15th and 16th century European woodcuts, from the Nuremberg Chronicle and the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili to Dürer's Rhinoceros and Holbein's Dance of Death. First edition sold out; second edition of 16 copies.
- Botánico Narcoticón: a pseudoscientific botanical treatise that crosses medieval herbal lore with contemporary medicine. Begun in 2018, expanded in 2019 and taken up again in 2025 on my own paper. Second edition of 16 copies.
- Alma Grabada: a four-handed book with Carolina Da Silva, bringing together her metal mezzotints and my burin woodblocks. Printed in May 2026.
- Post-Apocalyptic Chronicles: ten engravings made in Mexico City in 2020, while I was stranded by the border closures of the pandemic.
