ENGRAVINGS Gallery November 2025
About the technique: wood engraving (different from the more common woodcut) is carved with a burin into wood cut across the grain — end-grain — rather than along it. The method was perfected in England in the late 18th century by Thomas Bewick, working on boxwood, and became the standard for book and magazine illustration throughout the 19th century, prized for the fine, precise white line it allows.
I carve mostly on palo blanco (Calycophyllum multiflorum), a South American hardwood close in density to boxwood that was already being used for this technique in 1940s Rosario, in the circle around Gustavo Cochet and the engraver Santiago Minturn Zerva — a local tradition I see my own work as continuing. Once a block is carved, I ink it and print by hand on a vertical flatbed press, which impresses the design in relief.
